Circulation Procedures During Library Building Closure

The library buildings are closed due to COVID-19 safety precautions, but we can still loan you physical materials if you are able to come to the library to pick them up. Here is what you need to know:

  1. Place hold request(s) for St. Thomas items in CLICsearch. If the item has no request option, it cannot be requested. Call if you’d like assistance: (651) 962-5494. Sorry, no walk-up requests can be accepted. Only library staff may be in the library buildings at this time.
  2. Wait to receive an email in your St. Thomas email inbox letting you know your request is ready to be scheduled for pickup. The email will include instructions about the pickup location and how to arrange a pickup time. * Note that we currently have no courier service to deliver books between the different libraries, so you will have to pick up items from their home library location.
  3. Call to schedule a pickup time between 10 AM and 2 PM Monday through Friday. It may take up to 2 business days to process your request. Same-day service is unlikely.
  4. Come to the library location to pickup materials, and follow the instructions you’ve been provided via email to let staff know you are here to pickup your materials. Procedures may vary depending on pickup location.
  5. Follow instructions to return materials. Books can be deposited in the book drops at the OSF and Ireland Libraries. Keffer Library items can be returned where they were picked up. Do not deposit media items like DVDs and CDs in the book drops as they can be damaged or destroyed. To return media items, come to the library between 10-2 Monday through Friday and call the number listed on the front door to return items. We will open the door for you to drop them off.

Please note:

  • We are following CDC guidelines on quarantining and disinfecting materials, but the ultimate responsibility for your personal safety lies with you. Books and media cases can be wiped down with disinfectant wipes. However, do not use disinfectant wipes on CDs and DVDs.
  • It is recommended to quarantine your items for 24 hours before using.
  • CLIC items are not available for request.
  • Circulation is currently only available for current St. Thomas Faculty, Staff, and Students.

Explore Digitalia Film Library


It’s a great time to explore Digitalia Film Library, a streaming video database that offers a wide selection of multilingual and multi-national titles!
This collection of films and documentaries from Europe, North America, and Latin America features diverse subject areas in the arts, history, anthropology, nature, health, and so much more! Search by feature films and documentaries, check out new content, or search by genre from comedy and musicals, to drama and action. In addition to films, Digitalia also offers television shows and silent films. Try out one of these exciting selections!

Tercer Mundo (Third World) is a Chilean film from director César Caro Cruz. Part comedy, part science fiction, this film follows three twenty-somethings, discontented with their lives, who encounter a mystifying eclipse, a beautiful amulet, and maybe the end of the world.

Chagall – Malevich is a partly fictional biography of the Russian painter Marc Chagall told in the style of a folklore ballad. The colorful story depicts Chagall’s time in Vitebskin (Vitebsk, Russia) from 1917-18 when he formed the Academy of Modern Art and often clashed artistically with avant-garde artist and teacher Kazimir Malevich.

Witty and fast-paced, Carmo, Hit the Road is a drama and romance that tells the story a young woman tired of being stuck in the same old town. After rescuing a handicapped Spanish smuggler, she joins him on a reckless journey through Brazil.

Tuaregs: The Warriors of the Dunes is a fascinating documentary about a group of nomadic people lead by women who brave a treacherous life in the Sahara desert. Often referred to as the “Blue Men”, this term is derived from the indigo they use to dye their veils, which also stains their skin. They live lives without borders, governed by values of honor and hospitality, and lead their salt caravans through the Tenere, also called the “Anvil of the Sun”.

Galicia and Portugal are two territories with a common goal: to utilize the communal, uncultivated woodland to generate economic, environmental, and social wealth for their villages. Using luminous footage of the landscape, En todas as mans (In Everyone’s Hands) is a documentary that examines the real struggle the inhabitants of these territories face.

The eclectic documentary Cravan vs Cravan tells the story of Oscar Wilde’s nephew Arthur Cravan who disappeared in 1918 without a trace. Director Frank Nicotra, also a boxer and artist like Cravan himself, investigates the poet’s mysterious disappearance. He travels to Switzerland, Mexico, Paris, London, and Barcelona, visiting the worlds of boxing, art, and society intrigue to discover more about who Arthur Cravan was.

Jump Start your Success for Finals – Come to May 11, Virtual Study Night!

Hello Tommies!

Our traditional Study Night in the Library has gone online!   It’s a great night to tackle the work you may have been putting off or having trouble with.    And even if you are on top of everything – this night is for you!

Athough we are spending our days apart, Study Night allows you to with others virtually on Monday, May 11 between 7 and 9pm.   You’ll have the option to pop in and out of several break-out rooms including:  main study rooms (both quiet and more talkative); math and writing tutors; research librarians;  time planning & motivational coaching.  We’ll have a game room and a meditation/wellness/relaxation room for quick breaks throughout the evening.  And of course, there will be prizes!

Here’s a little about how it will work:

To join Study Night, be sure to RSVP now, and then on Monday, May 11, follow the Zoom Link to Study Night between 7 and 9 pm on Monday, May 11.  When you enter the main room, you’ll be able to tell the host which rooms you’d like to visit!  You can leave a room at any time, come back to the main room to be sent to a different room.  Stay as little or as long as you wish, just be sure to collect the prize codes!

About those prizes:   Collect a special code from each room that you visit.  At the end of the night, tell us the codes you’ve collected and you’ll be entered in the drawing for prizes.  The more rooms you visit, the more chances you’ll have to win!

You are invited to the library’s online Poetry Reading!

You are cordially invited to the library’s April Poetry Reading – and you may enjoy this event from the comfort of your own place!  Wherever you may be, we send you our wishes that things are going well for you with this selection of favorite poems shared by members of the St. Thomas community.

For 20 years the library hosted Poetry on the Patio during April – Poetry Month – outside on the library patio in late April.  Only a few times did we need to move it inside the library due to cold or rainy weather.

Now, during this time of social distancing, several members of the St. Thomas Community have recorded themselves reading their favorite poems for “Poetry On Your Patio.”   Thank you very much for tuning in – the link to the event here!

Library invites poetry readers!

Hello St. Thomas Community!

The Library invites you to record yourself reading one of your favorite poems – then send it to us, and we’ll share it online in celebration of April Poetry Month!

You may be familiar with our library’s past Poetry on the Patio events – held each spring over a span of 20 years, with the final event in April, 2018.  When you have a chance, take a look and you can see each of those year’s reading program and accompanying video

We’d love to hear your readings, but online this time!

If you would be willing to participate please rsvp to jakimlinger@stthomas.edu soon – she will get back to you with details on what to include in your video.  You may use YouTube or Panopto to make your recording.  We’re hoping to receive your readings no later than Thursday, April 23 so please get in touch with Julie asap!

Music & Media Collections Services Open Online

The Music and Media Collections of O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library is now closed physically but we still offer services needed while you study and work online!

Important FAQs:

How can I return DVDs and CDs?: You will not be able to return items physically to the collections until the library opens at a later unknown date. Do not put DVDs in drop box, they will break and would be your responsibility. Please contact Cindy Badilla-Melendez if you are leaving the city and not returning to campus.

Will I incur late fees when the library is closed?: Not at this time. We have extended the due dates of all the items that are currently checked out to patrons, while the Library is closed.

Can I put films on course reserves? We can no longer put physical titles on course reserve. However, faculty can still request streaming titles for class viewing. Contact Cindy, Head of the Department cbadillame@stthomas.edu

How can I replace this DVD/CD for streaming? Contact the Head of the Department immediately for possible options.

Faculty members, students, and staff can still access thousands of streaming titles for research, projects, and classes. We are happy to help you find what you are looking for!

LibKey Nomad: Get to the Full-Text Faster!

Have you ever found an article citation in Google Scholar or *gasp* Wikipedia, and wondered if the library had full-text access? Or perhaps a publisher has sent you links to some articles hot off the press and you just really wish you didn’t have to search for them via the library site to see if we have access? Great news–the St. Thomas Libraries have begun using a new tool called LibKey Nomad. And now that many of us find ourselves working from home, LibKey Nomad will make connecting to full-text access provided by the Libraries even easier!

LibKey Nomad is a browser add-on for Chrome that facilitates access to articles available from St. Thomas Libraries’ subscriptions without needing to go to the library website.  It’s like a shortcut to our GET IT service. And because it is a browser tool, you will know if an article is available before you have to log in to your University of St. Thomas library account. LibKey Nomad is currently only available for Chrome.

To start using LibKey Nomad, you will need to add the extension from the Chrome Web Store. Detailed instructions about installing LibKey Nomad and using it can be found in our LibKey Nomad library guide.

JoVE Offers FREE Access through June 15

In response to the significant impact COVID-19 is having on the educational community, JoVE is providing FREE access to their STEM education video library collection through June 15. While this access does not include all of JoVE’s content, it does include access to the following:

  • JoVE Core – a video textbook that isolates and visually presents core concepts in Biology and Social Psychology to improve learning comprehension.
  • JoVE Science Education – a collection of simple, easy-to-understand video demonstrations in eight STEM fields
  • Lab Manual – comprehensive, curriculum focused videos for introductory biology lab courses

In order to obtain access, you must use your St. Thomas email address to create an individual JoVE account. Go to https://www.jove.com/ and click the “Log In” link at the top of the page and then hit the “Sign Up” button that is provided. From there you can save the login/password info to your browser or simply re-enter when returning to the JoVE site.

At the Music & Media Collections we will do everything we can to continue supporting the teaching and learning during this difficult time. Faculty if you have DVDs that you were planing to show in class or wanted your students to watch we may be able find streaming options for those titles or alternatives.
