Docuseek2 Streaming Video

As winter in Minnesota drags on, many of us are hoping for warmth and sun. If you’re looking to explore exotic lands without leaving the comfort of your dorm, the video streaming service Docuseek2 is a great place to start. Travel the world and the see people and cultures from around the globe through documentaries on art & architecture, anthropology & archaeology, cultural & ethnic studies, environment, geography, social studies, and world regions. Ranging from quick informational videos that are only a few minutes long to feature-length documentary films, Docuseek2 has a great variety of documentary and social issues films.

Ambrose Video Collection

The Ambrose Video Collection has over 400 titles available for streaming for students, faculty, and staff at UST. It covers the subject areas of American history, American literature, world history, ancient history, geology, biology, theology, art, sciences, and all the Shakespeare plays that were produced by the BBC.

Below are a few suggested titles that show the broad range of media available from streaming through The Ambrose Video Collection:

Julius Caesar: Watch this classic Shakespeare play come to life through the work of BBC Productions. Julius Caesar is a highly ambitious political leader in Rome whose aim is to become dictator. Caesar is assassinated due to the plotting of Marcus Brutus and Cassius, who meet their inevitable defeat and plunge the country into civil war.

Glaciers: The most powerful geologic force on the planet – glaciers. Glaciers can dominate an entire continent or reshape a continent’s surface features in the blink of a geologic eye. All the spectacular mountain peaks that inspire us have been shaped by glaciers. This thirty-minute short documentary includes interviews with leading glacial experts from around the country.

Great African American Authors: 1761-1901: From pre-Revolutionary War poetry and sermons, to anti-Civil War slave narratives, to Jim Crow Era segregation and discrimination issues, the Civil Rights period, to the Black Artists movement and to the Black New Wave of the 21st Century, this breakthrough eight-part series, Great African American Authors, tells the amazing story of the evolution of the African American literary tradition in the United States. This first section celebrates authors born out of slavery and the African oral tradition who gave voice to the struggles of African Americans in the early days of this nation. Program one examines the beginning of African American Literature through the authors Jupiter Hammon, Phillis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Booker T. Washington.

1st International Film Festival on Campus

All are cordially invited to attend a first of its kind on the St. Thomas campus International Film Festival 2018. This collaborative effort represents five departments (Modern & Classical Languages, St.Thomas Libraries, Office of Student Affairs, Student Diversity & Inclusion Services, and Film Studies) who have chosen the theme Cultural Placements and Displacements: Perceptions and Self Perceptions of a Cultural Identity.

The opening film, “Faces Places” was nominated for an Oscar this year in the Best Documentary – Feature category.

Schedule of Events – all films will be shown in the OEC Auditorium beginning at 6:30 pm
Thursday, March 15     “Faces Places”   from France    (Opening Reception follows)
Thursday, March 22     “Who is Dayani Cristal?” from Mexico
Thursday, April 12         “Shun Li and the Poet” from Italy
Thursday, April 19        “North Face” from Germany     (Closing Reception follows)

Discussion sessions will be held after most films.

The St. Thomas International Film Festival 2018 is free and open to all. The entire university community and the general public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please plan to join us!

“America; the Jesuit Review of Faith and Culture” is now available via Flipster.

The University of St. Thomas Libraries are pleased to announce that we recently added America; the Jesuit Review of Faith and Culture to the list of the periodicals the University of St. Thomas students, faculty, and staff may read online via Flipster.

The University of St. Thomas’ students, faculty, and staff may read a number of popular periodicals we make available on this digital newsstand, which may be accessed anytime on computers or mobile devices. Periodicals in Flipster have true-to-life layouts with all the full-color images and advertisements one finds in the print version of the same periodical.

Suggested reading: “A Christian Funeral Classic” by Colleen Dulle, in the January 8, 2018, issue of America. The article tells of the work of the University of St. Thomas’ Artist in Residence, Fr. Michael Joncas, whose hymn, “On Eagle’s Wings” achieved global popularity 38 years ago.

Past UST Christmas Concerts at the Music and Media Collections

A beloved tradition in the St. Thomas community is the annual Christmas concert. Each year this concert takes place in Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. The concert has performances by the Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Liturgical Choir, Donne Unite, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, Brass Ensemble and the Guitar Ensemble. In recent years, the event has become so popular that the concert has been expanded to two performances, though it oftentimes still sells out.

If you missed this year’s concert, you still have an opportunity to listen to wonderful holiday music by the musicians of St. Thomas! Recordings of past concerts are available at the Music & Media Collections in O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library. These recording are a great way to get in the Christmas spirit!

Musicals at the Music and Media Collections

As much as I dream of traveling to New York City and catching a show on Broadway, as a busy college student it does not seem to be in the cards (at least for the next few years). However, I can still satisfy my musical cravings with CDs of original cast recordings for all of my favorite shows. The Music & Media Collection has a wide variety of music genres available for check out or streaming, meaning there is something for everyone’s interest. For a musical geek like me, here are a few of my favorite Broadway picks from the collection:

Anything Goes is set aboard the ocean liner S. S. American, where nightclub singer and evangelist Reno Sweeney is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, but to his dismay, Hope is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.

Due to an unhappy curse, King Sextimus is unable to speak. Meanwhile, his terror-of-a-wife, Queen Aggravain, has taken over control of the kingdom. Will the unrefined princess Winnifred the Woebegone finally be the one to pass the queen’s test?

Molly Brown is determined to rise from her country roots and marry a rich man. She finds one in Johnny Brown, who has just sold off his lucrative claim on a Colorado silver mine. Johnny again strikes it rich, this time in gold, making the pair Denver royalty. However, money does not ensure happiness and, with their union on the rocks, Molly travels to Europe — before making an eventful return trip on the Titanic.

Christmas music at St. Thomas Music and Media Collections

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, I believe that no one can rightfully say that it is too early to listen to Christmas music. The St. Thomas Music & Media Collections are a great place to access CDs or streaming audio for all of your festive favorites. As a self-proclaimed expert, who has been listening to Christmas music since November 1^st, here is one of my top picks from the Collections:

American Folk Songs for Christmas
Call Number: M1629.S44 .A54 1989

This compilation of less-commonly known Christmas songs represent a variety of folksongs that find their origins in European and British Isles Ballads, several African-American spirituals that express a deeply spiritual celebration of Christmas, as well as several classic, better-known Christmas favorites. This lively recording is sung & played by sisters Peggy, Barbara, and Penny Seeger, assisted by a group of children from the South Boston Music School.

Music Resources at the Library

As students, faculty, and staff visit the Music & Media Collections at OSF to browse, they often limit themselves to only the DVD collection. However, there are also many music resources available for your use. A wide range of genres are found both in the physical CD collection and the multiple music streaming services accessible through the library website. Music streaming services have both audio and visual recordings, music documentaries, dance performances, and more. Many of the streaming services also offer the option to create music playlists for personal or classroom use. Check out some of the great resources for music, as well as learn how to find them yourself!

Naxos Music Library
Naxos Music Library streaming audio database offers hundreds of thousands of tracks of classical, jazz, world, and folk music. Search for music by composer, artist, period, year of composition, instrument, label, duration, mood, or genre. Added features include composer biographies, musical terms glossaries, and work analyses.

Music Online: Smithsonian Global Sound
Smithsonian Global Sound streaming audio database has more than 40,000 individual tracks of music, spoken word, and natural and human-made sounds. Included are readings of literary and dramatic works, historic speeches, language instruction, natural sounds, environmental and mechanical sounds, sound effects, children’s music, and traditional music from virtually everywhere in the world.

Medici.TV
A streaming music video database covering over 1,500 films in high definition with the best of classical music from Baroque to Contemporary music, including: concerts, operas, ballets, archival documents, portraits of artists and composers, master classes, conductors in rehearsals. There are over 100 live broadcasts every year from leading concert halls and classical music festivals.

Day of the Dead Documentaries

As many people celebrate Halloween today, another holiday is being celebrated: Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. This holiday is celebrated throughout Mexico, particularly in the central and southern regions of the country, where the celebration originated. Day of the Dead is also observed in other regions where people with Mexican ancestry live, especially in the United States. This multi-day celebration, which takes place from October 31^st -November 2^nd, is a day of remembrance for loved ones and a celebration of their lives.

If you would like to learn more about the Day of the Dead or other holidays celebrated throughout the world, the Music & Media Collection has vast databases with documentaries about world religions, anthropology, sociology, language, art and many other subjects.

Database trial: Simmons Local Consumer Insights

We now have a trial for Simmons Local Consumer Insights, as an addition to our Simmons OneView subscription (we are limited to 5 simultaneous users.) Simmons OneView provides data on adult U.S. consumers based on national surveys, and covers a wide variety of products, brands, and services. (There’s more information on how to use Simmons OneView on our Simmons OneView library guide.)

The Local Consumer Insights lets you view this information for all of the U.S.’s 209 Nielsen media markets, or DMAs (we are in the Minneapolis-St. Paul DMA.) Once you’ve logged in, to get the local data, click on the Study tab, then choose the area/DMA that you want.
