At the beginning of summer, it has been a long-time tradition of the UST Libraries to post recommendations by library staff for your reading enjoyment. Our Summer Reading List for 2014 is off to a good start and recommendations will continue to be included as they are submitted.

During the summer of 2014, the Department of Special Collections will be installing compact shelving in its archival storage area. We are very excited about this as the project as it will increase the capacity of the area by over 50%, allowing for growth of the university’s collections of archival, manuscript and rare books collections for many years to come.
To accommodate the work involved in this project, the University Archives and manuscript collections currently held by department will be placed in storage and will not be accessible for the duration of the project. We will be able to place limited amount of essential records in temporary storage for access during this project. The University Archivist is working with affected university departments to identify those materials. Access to these records will be by appointment with the University Archivist.
Additionally, the reading room for the Department of Special Collections/University Archives will close June 23, 2014 and will remain closed through the end of August 2014. During this period, there will be no access to Special Collections & University Archives materials by faculty, staff, students, and other researchers in the department’s reading room; phone and email reference service will be limited. In the interim, researchers are encourage the use of the department’s digitized collections.

You’re in luck! Everyone is welcome to take a few moments’ break from the stress of finals, receive some fluffy encouragement, and spend time with other animal lovers before heading back to work.

Shannon Heitkamp ’15
UST Economics and English major Shannon Heitkamp ’15 was recently selected for a summer internship at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan.
This prestigious and highly competitive program (8 awarded from an applicant pool of more than 240) provides students with graduate level coursework and research project opportunities in quantitative methods of social research. View the press release.
This summer, in addition to graduate level coursework and seminars at ICPSR in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she’ll be engaged in a research project with ICPSR’s extensive social science data archives, likely working on longitudinal research in education.
Shannon applied for the internship in January, submitting an online application and references. She then participated in 2 rounds of interviews, and was notified of her award about 3 weeks ago. The internship carries a $4,000 stipend, room and board in university housing, and a scholarship covering the cost of fees, texts, and materials for coursework in the ICPSR Summer Program.
She worked with UST Econ professor Monica Hartmann on her application and some ongoing course research. Dr. Hartmann says of Shannon: “I am thrilled that Shannon was selected for this honor. Her work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and maturity made her a highly qualified candidate. Last summer, Shannon conducted qualitative research with my colleague Dr. Susan Callaway in the English Department. Through this research, Shannon learned that ESL students were interested in having opportunities to meet American students to practice their English. In response to her findings, the English Café was started with collaboration with her research advisor, Academic Counseling, International Student Services, and the library. This blending of research and practical action will serve Shannon well in her future endeavors.”
At UST Shannon has also served as a student writing consultant with the Center for Writing and is an Excel! Research Scholar.
UST is a member institution of the Consortium, and subscribes to the ICPSR database, an extensive archive of political and social research data. ICPSR works with researchers to deposit, archive, and preserve their data, and makes the data sets and documentation available to subscribers for download and analysis using statistical software.

Is your cell phone almost out of battery power? Got to call home to mom? Forgot to bring your cell phone charger? Now you don’t have to worry when you’re in the Library!
The O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library now has two cell phone charging stations. One is located on the main floor by Coffee Bené and the other is by the Lower Level computer lab.
The charging stations can power 8 devices at once — 4 Apple (includes iPhone 5), 3 Micro, and 1 Mini. A 10 minute charge will produce a half hour of cell phone use.
For the next few months, the O’SF library is please to present some of the art of Harriet Bart. A Minnesota native, Harriet Bart is a conceptual artist working across disciplines in a variety of media. She creates evocative content through the narrative power of objects, the intimacy of artists books, and the theater of installation. She has a deep and abiding interest in the personal and cultural expression of memory; it is at the core of her work. You may link to Ms. Bart’s webpage here. Bart’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Germany. She has completed more than a dozen public art commissions in the United States, Japan, and Israel. She has won two Minnesota Book Awards and been the recipient of fellowships from Forecast Public Art, McKnight Foundation, Bush Foundation, MacDowell Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, NEA Arts Midwest, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her work is in many museum, university, and private collections, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Weisman Art Museum, Jewish Museum, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and Sackner Archive of Visual and Concrete Poetry. Bart is a founding member of W.A.R.M. Gallery and Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art. She is represented by Driscoll Babcock, New York.

Since 1958, the American Library Association has chosen a week in April to celebration National Library Week. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate.
National Library Week is April 13-19th this year, and the national theme is “Lives Change @ Your Library.” UST Libraries will be celebrating from April 14-17th and have come up with a variety of programs and events throughout the week. We are excited to share it all with you!
