New Libraries website launches

You may have noticed by now that our new Libraries website launched last night. We’ve moved our web content into a template that incorporates the University’s new web styles.  The look and feel is quite different, but the structure of the site is largely the same, so most of the features you’re used to seeing are roughly in the same place.

We now move on to “reskinning” many of the associated web applications you’ve likely used in the past: Research & Course Guides, the Get It and Journals A-Z pages, EZ Proxy login, Interlibrary Loan, and some others.  This will take a few days, and you may notice some minor hiccups as the systems are changed. If you run into difficulties getting pages to appear or function properly, try the following:

  • refresh your browser window
  • wait a few minutes and try again
  • contact us via Ask A Librarian

New Service: Staff Book Delivery!

IMG_1424During the Fall 2015 semester the OSF Library began delivering books to St. Paul campus faculty. Over the last 4 months 77 faculty have registered for the service and the library has delivered approximately 450 books to faculty offices.

The OSF Library is now expanding this service to include St. Paul campus staff.

UST staff members on the St. Paul campus can now opt to have books requested from CLICnet or Interlibrary Loan delivered to their department mailbox.

To participate, fill out this form first, then select OSF as your “pickup location” when making requests.

 

Delivery Service Policies:

  • This service is only available on the St. Paul Campus.
  • When requesting items via CLICnet and ILLiad you must specify OSF as your pickup location.
  • Upon arrival, CLICnet and ILLiad items will be checked out to your library account and delivered to your on-campus mailbox.
  • Once the items have been delivered to your mailbox you assume all responsibility for them.
  • DVDs and VHS are excluded from this delivery service.

Christmas Music in the Great Hall with the Guitar Ensemble – Friday Dec 11 at 1:45 pm

Please join us for a holiday treat from the St. Thomas Guitar Ensemble.  Come to the second floor of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library and find us in the north end of the Great Hall at 1:45 pm on December 11.    We’ll be treated to some familiar and some not so familiar Christmas music in this wonderfully beautiful space.

Take a break from your studies, your daily projects, and stop over for some cocoa and cookies.

Treasures from the Rare Books Collection – Irish translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

 

img532Lewis Carroll’s most notable book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland celebrates the 150th anniversary (sesquicentennial) of its publication this year. This classic children’s tale is so beloved that it has never been out of print in its 150 year history and has been translated into over 100 languages.

Among the rare books held in the Celtic Collection is an Irish language version of this work. Published in 1922 by the Maunsel Press, Eactrad Eiblis i dTir na nLongantas was translated by Padraig O Cadhla with illustrations by Kathleen Verschoyle and Máire Úna Hyde.  Its illustrations depict many of the familiar scenes of the story including Alice meeting the Cheshire Cat and the famous tea party.  One notable difference in this edition of the story is that the character of Alice is illustrated with dark hair (rather than with the familiar blonde hair).

The Maunsel Press was one of the leading publishers in Ireland in the first quarter of the 20th century.  The press was well known as a vehicle for young Irish writers and (after the Easter Rising of 1916) for works of a political nature.   This work is representative of the nationalist bent of the press as it was published to introduce the Irish language to children.

The Celtic Collection is the largest of component of the UST Libraries rare books collections.  It features rare and unique materials relating to Irish history, language and literature, with materials published in both the English and Irish languages.  For more information on the UST Libraries rare books and manuscripts collections see our website.

noonartsound: Gypsy Jazz in the Library – Dec 1 at Noon

All are invited to the Tuesday, December 1 noonartsound: Gypsy Jazz with Kreitzer and Harrington

“Hot club” or “Gypsy jazz” is a style of music made popular by guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930’s.  It is characterized by a swinging rhythm beat, and very fast chromatic lead, both played on hollow bodied guitars.

 

About our musicians:

Mark Kreitzer has been playing music in the region for years, as part of rock, country, bluegrass, folk, traditional jazz and Gypsy jazz bands.  Mark is an expert player of a number of instruments, including guitar, mandolin and fiddle.  He currently plays with the Mark Kreitzer Band, the ’53 Swingbillies, Patty and the Buttons, and the Clearwater Hot Club, and performs regularly at Dulono’s, The Aster Café, Vieux Carre and other local and regional venues.

Dean Harrington has been performing and teaching guitar in the Twin Cities for over twenty years.  His career began in classical music with a degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Minnesota.  He is currently performing with the Dean Harrington Trio and the Mill City Hot Club.

In the words of our art historian and presenter, Shelly Nordtorp-Madson,
“From Romanticized paintings of gypsy life, to screeds about their “disreputable” lifestyles, to “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding,”  the Roma, or Travelers, or whatever often pejorative name given them, gypsies are a prime example of  “The Other” —  a society that lives within the majority culture, but keeps a distance as well.   We will explore the visual manifestations of gypsies, generally by non-Roma, and explore the mystique of the gypsy lifestyle.”

Guitar Ensemble to Perform in the Library’s “Harry Potter Room” this Friday at 1:45 pm!

guitarThe UST Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Joan Griffith, will present a casual concert in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library’s Great Hall on Friday, November 20th, from 1:45-2:30 pm.   The 2nd floor Great Hall is often affectionately called the “Harry Potter Room”.

All are welcome to relax or study to the sounds of classical, jazz, and Latin music, and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. The informal setting will allow listeners to come and go as their schedules permit.

Come enjoy the music in this beautiful space!
