Database Trial: Counseling and Therapy in Video V. 5

During the month of October, the University of St. Thomas Libraries is conducting a trial for Counseling and Therapy in Video Volume 5.
Symptom Media’s DSM-5®/ICD-10 guided films showcase mental health symptoms unfolding. Films are used and integrated in undergraduate, graduate and professional nursing, social work, psychology, counseling programs to introduce and improve understanding, recognition, and diagnosing of psychiatric disorders as well as improve student clinical competency.

October database TRIAL: ProQuest Religion Database

During the month of October, the University of St. Thomas Libraries will be conducting a trial of the ProQuest Religion Database.

 

 

ProQuest Religion Database covers formal theological studies and commentary on topics of general interest from the perspectives of many, worldwide religions. In addition, there are many titles from religious publishing bodies and nondenominational organizations.

By Land, Air, and Sea: WWII Documentaries

Visit Digitalia, one of many video streaming sites the Music and Media Collections offers!

Digitalia featrues Eric Brown: A Pilot’s Story (2014) a documentary from filmmaker Nicholas Jones about one of Britain’s greatest aviators in World War Two. This feature-length program centers on an interview with the then 95 year old Captain Brown. Brilliant archival footage and rare photographs from Brown’s personal library illustrate his extraordinary story.

There are many WWII-related DVDs in the Music and Media Collections. Here are two great selections!
Navajo Code Talkers is remarkable documentary detailing the extraordinary work by twenty-nine young men from government-run Navajo reservations in the 1940s. Fighting for the country that sought to annihilate their culture and existence, they used their native language to create a code that could not be broken by their Japanese enemies.

For a greater scope of World War Two check out WWII: 3-Film Collection produced by the History Chanel. This unique documentary series consists of perspectives on the war from the land, air and from space. EZ Proxy login page changing to use Single Sign On

You may have noticed that if you log into Canvas and then head over to CLICsearch or another St. Thomas resource you are already logged in. That is because the University of St. Thomas has been moving towards Single Sign On to combat login fatigue.

However, you may have also noticed that even if you are logged into Office 365, Canvas, and CLICsearch, EZ Proxy would still ask you to log in before accessing one of the library databases.

Beginning Wednesday, August 29, 2018, the repetitive EZ Proxy Login will be no more, it will now all be done through the already familiar St. Thomas login page we know and love.

What do you need to do? Nothing!

No links will change as EZ Proxy is just changing the login page it presents to users.

Here’s the schedule of events:

  1. Tonight around midnight we will make the switch temporarily as a final test and then revert back.
  2. Tomorrow around 9am we will permanently change the configuration.
  3. Technical staff will be around all day Wednesday and Thursday to make sure things go well.

Library staff will monitor the situation. From what we can tell there should be no impact on services as it is just replacing one login with another.

UST libraries will cancel Nexis Uni, and replace it with Westlaw Campus Research

 

The University of St. Thomas Libraries subscribe to databases and electronic materials based on curricular needs and faculty requests.  We are continually watching for products that address these needs with relevant, easy-to-access content.  One long-standing need is legal information for students who are not in law school.  For example, students studying business or social work may require primary and secondary legal information on a variety of topics in their disciplines.   Lexis Nexis, now known as Nexis Uni, has long been our database for that type of legal information, as well as providing national and international news sources and public company information.  However, this database has never been easy to search or navigate, so we have been looking for another database that can provide the same information.  We have finally found one, Westlaw Campus Research.

Westlaw is a reputable database, and a staple in law libraries across the country.  The Westlaw Campus Research is designed for academic research across the disciplines.  Along with legal materials, it also contains thousands of full-text news sources, and information about public companies.  The decision to cancel Nexis Uni and replace it with Westlaw was made after careful consideration and a trial of the database during which librarians gathered feedback from students and faculty. The response to Westlaw was positive, especially around the interface and ease of searching.  We understand that this is a big change and are committed to working with you to make that transition as easy as possible. Our subscription to Nexis Uni will end on July 1, 2018.  Access to Westlaw Campus Research is expected to begin by June 2018, so you will have some time when both are available.  And for current local and international news sources updated daily, the UST libraries subscribe to Access World News and ProQuest Global Newsstream.  Both databases provide access to thousands of news sources that can be searched by topic, Access World News can also be searched by region.  If there is anything that your subject librarian can do in order to assist you in using these databases, or to understand the materials in Westlaw, please let us know.

“America; the Jesuit Review of Faith and Culture” is now available via Flipster.

The University of St. Thomas Libraries are pleased to announce that we recently added America; the Jesuit Review of Faith and Culture to the list of the periodicals the University of St. Thomas students, faculty, and staff may read online via Flipster.

The University of St. Thomas’ students, faculty, and staff may read a number of popular periodicals we make available on this digital newsstand, which may be accessed anytime on computers or mobile devices. Periodicals in Flipster have true-to-life layouts with all the full-color images and advertisements one finds in the print version of the same periodical.

Suggested reading: “A Christian Funeral Classic” by Colleen Dulle, in the January 8, 2018, issue of America. The article tells of the work of the University of St. Thomas’ Artist in Residence, Fr. Michael Joncas, whose hymn, “On Eagle’s Wings” achieved global popularity 38 years ago.

National Film Board of Canada Films

Though only a few hundred miles to the north of St. Paul, Canadian film and animation offer a unique perspective that is daring and innovative, with global impact. Of the many streaming services available from the Music & Media Collections at OSF Library, the extensive collection of animations, documentaries, shorts, experimental works, and feature-length films found on the National Film Board of Canada database is a great source for an international perspective with films in both French and English.National Film Board of Canada features over 3,000 pieces to peak viewers interest in a variety of subjects: the environment, human rights, indigenous peoples, international conflict, the arts, and many more. Discover new releases, old favorites, and classic Canadian films with works by Canada’s most talented directors with films for all ages and all interests.

The current National Film Board of Canada subjects featured include World War II, hockey, vignettes, cultural diversity, land claims and rights, and endangered species. These are just some examples of the many forms of media and subject matter found on the NFB website, with topics relevant globally.
