A Tale About Award Winners

On Monday, February 2, youth services librarians and children’s literature enthusiasts will be anxious to hear the announcements of the major award winners for 2014. Among the awards to be announced will be the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, Coretta Scott King awards, Michael L. Printz award, and a number of others. Authors and illustrators will be congratulated; and writers, reviewers, and bloggers will be predicting that the winners will “NEVER go out of print”.

Well, here’s the other side of the story. On January 28, Keffer Library added the last Newbery Medal winner that was missing from our collection. Daniel Boone, the 1940 winner has been out of print for many years. UST library staff have been watching for a used copy to become available, and finally one did! So let’s hear a cheer for the good news, and give a thanks to library acquisition staff for their work to find and acquire this rare book.

Benezit Dictionary of Artists

The Benezit Dictionary of Artists is now available online for the first time via Oxford Art Online. With nearly 170,000 entries on artists from antiquity to the present day and featuring regular updates, Benezit is one of the most comprehensive and definitive resources on artists in the English language. Entries are clear and concise, and Benezit contains thousands of auction records, museum holdings, and bibliographies. In addition to its outstanding scope and depth, two features in particular make Benezit unique among art reference works: its superb coverage of obscure artists and the inclusion of images of artists’ signatures, monograms, and stamps.

Key Features of Benezit Include:

Nearly 170,000 entries on artists from the first English edition (2006), the largest edition to date, plus revisions and new biographies exclusively available online
More than 11,000 images of artists signatures, monograms, and stamps of sale
Detailed museum listings, bibliographies, exhibition information, and auction records
Ability to view Benezit results separately or alongside Grove Art and other Oxford art reference works

No Access to SRDS Media Solutions from Dec. 24-29

SRDS Media Solutions will experience a planned downtime affecting their online services during the winter break. Beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24, they will perform scheduled network infrastructure and security maintenance that will cause SRDS services on the web to be unavailable until Monday, Dec. 29. During the outage, they will post any updates to Twitter @SRDS. Check-in there to keep up-to-date on when everything is back up and running.

Database Highlights & Trials

General Science Collection is now more specific

Genera l Science Collection is a database of full-text of science journals. It is provided free from the state through the Electronic Library of Minnesota (ELM). I am pleased to announce that the product has become far less general and far more peer-reviewed. What was a database of mostly general science magazines has now become a database of mostly peer-reviewed scholarly journals in the sciences. When you search the results default to full text academic journals. You can narrow those results to peer-reviewed journals only, or only magazines, news and even videos.

‘Tis the season to return books!

Greetings, Ireland Library users! Congratulations on finishing another term strong!

After the semester ends you’ll be catching up on lots of mundane but important tasks, like sleep, laundry, paying bills, and returning library books!

Ireland Library will be closed for the majority of Christmas Break, so please plan to return library items to the book returns outside of O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library. There are two of them. The easiest one to get to is located on the south side of the building in the loading dock area off of Cleveland Ave. The other book drop is located off the quad on the northwest corner of the building.

Of course, you can return library items and chat with staff when Ireland is open as well.

Tue, Dec 23: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Bookdrop Locations during Christmas Break!

Just a brief reminder that if you need to drop off library materials that are due after regular library hours or over holidays, you can use one of our various bookdrop locations:

Outside O’Shaughnessy-Frey: north of the front door at the bottom of the steps
Outside O’Shaughnessy-Frey: south side of the library
Outside Keffer: in skyway near old front entrance & elevator

Ireland Library reference room renovations in J-term

Beginning on December 22, 2014, Ireland Library will temporarily restrict access to its main reading/study room, public computers, and the library’s reference collection in association with a renovation project scheduled to be completed by January 30. While it is closed temporarily, the reference collection will be unavailable for consultation in the reading room, classrooms, or for reproduction requests.

The much-needed building renovations include asbestos abatement, installing new carpeting, refurbishing ceiling lights, repairing the plaster and painting walls.

What can we do at Ireland Library during this temporary renovation project?

Many services, resources, and our knowledgeable staff members will still be accessible. Patrons may study in study carrels in the building’s stacks. Bible dictionaries and commentaries will be removed from the Reference Room and kept in a separate location where they may be used by students enrolled in J-Term classes. Circulating books and periodicals will remain accessible and may still be borrowed. Reference service and the Reserve Collection will be available.

Alternate public computing options

As Ireland Library’s public computing center will be temporarily unavailable, students, faculty and staff can access digital content such as e-books, full text articles or electronic journals (via CLICnet and library databases) on personal laptops, tablets, or smart phones at Ireland Library. Campus and community patrons who need to use public computers may take advantage of those at OSF Library on North Campus, Keffer Library (Mpls), or the Schoenecker Law Library (Mpls). [Check our Library Hours Page for all UST library addresses and hours.] Group study rooms are also available at the UST libraries listed above.

Ireland Library Hours during J-Term

M-F: 8 AM to 5 PM

Sat & Sun closed.

Hours will return to normal for spring semester.

Stressed About Finals? UST Libraries Can Help!

It’s the most stressful time of the year!

Oh, it’s the most stressful time of the year…

As we see stressed out faces around campus, we just wanted to remind everyone that UST Libraries are here to help out! We have prepared a variety of resources for the next week to help you get through. Here’s a list of the highlights:

Extended Hours

As the Newsroom reported, we will be opening early and/or closing late many days in the next week. Here’s a quick rundown of the extended hours (in bold):

Friday, 12/12: 7:00am – 10pm

Saturday 12/13: 10am – 10pm

Tuesday-Thursday, 12/16-12/18: 6am – 2:30am

Friday, 12/19: 6am – 6pm

Therapy Pets

Yes, folks – the therapy pets are back! Stop by 6-8pm on Study Monday, 12/15, to get some furry cuddles in with dogs, rabbits, and a Guinea pig!

Treats

Look for updates about regular study break treats, hosted by the USG and Wellness center.

Coffee Bene has also graciously agreed to be open on Saturday (!), 12/13, from 10:30am-4pm

Stress-Free Zone

Do you need to just get away from it all for a moment or two? Stop by our “Stress Free Zone” in room 102 each afternoon 12/15-19 for some coloring, puzzles, card games, and more. Remember, it’s been proven that regular study breaks can help with concentration!

Ear Plugs and Lockers

Need some help focusing? Grab some earplugs in the OSF Rotunda and/or drop off your valuables in a locker at the circulation desk. Noise and worry about theft will be gone, leaving more time to focus on your work!

Need storage while studying in the Library?

The OSF Library now has 14 lockers available for patrons to use!

The lockers will offer patrons a place to store personal belongings such as laptops, small backpacks, and purses when they leave the library for dinner or class instead of leaving these items unprotected at tables, study carrels, and in study rooms.

So stop by the Circulation Desk to check-out a locker for a 4 hour period, today.
