UPDATE: O’Shaughnessy-Frey Rearranging its Books and Periodicals Collections

It has been a little over a year since the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library started shifting its book collection up out of the Sub Level.

The purpose of this project is so that we can move ALL bound journals to the Sub Level of the library and start the book collection on the Lower Level, extending up to Level 4.

As the Fall semester begins the following book call number ranges will be on these new floors:

Level 4: PQ – Z ll

Level 3: HX – PN

Level 2: E – HV

Lower Level: A – D, this will be an ongoing shift throughout the fall semester

Note that Periodicals with titles that begin S – Z have been shifted from Level 4 to Sub Level.

If you have questions or comments about this project, please let us know.

See the Library’s March 12th, 2014 blog post for more details on the project

RefWorks access restored

Over the weekend we experienced downtime with RefWorks. The parent company, Proquest, mishandled our renewal and let it be known that St. Thomas decided not to renew our subscription. That is not true. We most certainly renewed the subscription but there was a mix-up at the parent company. We in the libraries apologize for any difficulty this may have caused. Please know that RefWorks has been fully restored and no one lost any content.

Treasures from the Rare Books Collection – Foxe’s Book of Martyrs

The Rare Books collection in the UST Libraries Department of Special Collections holds a number of rare, unique and just plain interesting books in its collection.  One item that was pulled out recently for a researcher to examine was the Ecclesiastical History Conteynyng the Actes and Monuments of Martyrs, popularly known as Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.   Written by the English historian John Foxe, this title was first published in English in 1563.   It is a polemical account of the sufferings of Protestants under the Catholic Church (particularly those living in England and Scotland). The book was highly influential in its time and helped shape long lasting popular notions of Catholicism in those countries.

The 1563 edition of the book was to that time the largest publishing project ever undertaken in England. One of the most interesting features of this work are the sixty distinctive woodcut impressions found on its pages (see an example below).

The UST Libraries’ copy of this book is from the third edition, published in 1576.  What makes this edition different from the previous two versions is that the book is printed on smaller size paper and with a smaller type font than the earlier editions.
