Sacred Arts Festival runs through May 23; visit Geography of Home in OSF Library

“Geography of Home” by Susan Armington is on exhibit now through May 23rd and you are invited to view it in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library.   Susan Armington’s painting celebrates the geography of the Twin Cities area. She explores cultures and places through her map paintings. Her interest in how art can encourage connections between communities comes through in her works.   This piece beautifully celebrates the geography of the Twin Cities area, including rivers and streams, as well as the experiences of individuals who have come to the region and made it their home.   A book that provides translations into English of these personal accounts, written in over 20 different languages, accompanies the painting. For more information about Susan Armington and her work visit http://www.thesusanarmington.com/.
“Sacred Waters” is the theme of the 32nd annual University of St. Thomas Sacred Arts Festival. The festival, open to the public, is a celebration of sacred art and an exploration of faith and festival events are free and take place on St. Thomas’ St. Paul campus.

Finals pressure starting to build?

We here at the library have many ways to relieve stress during finals.  We have tools that will help speed your research,  services to help you relax, and people just waiting to help you when you get stuck.

summon smallWhen you don’t know where to start your research, I highly recommend our new beta search service SummonSummon allows you to search millions of articles (newspaper, journal, or magazine) and CLICnet all at once – over 200,000,000 resources in a single search box.  I dare you not to find something on your topic.  More about Summon.

refworksRefWorks builds bibliographies for you.  So if you were told to create a bibliography for your final paper in the APA format and have no clue what that means, no worries.  Dump the citations into RefWorks, choose APA and dunzo (ok, check it first to make sure the system did what it was supposed to do).  My point is, RefWorks helps build bibliographies with ease.

coffee bene Give yourself a break and relax with some calming tea from Cafe Bene.  Or wire yourself up for a marathon session with espresso.  Either way, Bene’s got you covered.  Hours | Menu

Chair massages – The Wellness Center is sponsoring chair massages on Thursdays for students this spring semester.  On the first Thursday each month, that’s May 6th for those of you playing at home , the masseuse will be on the first floor of O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center – next to  Coffee Bene. On the other Thursdays of the month, the masseuse will be located in Koch Commons. The cost is $6 for 5 minutes or $12 for 10 minutes, and flex dollars can be used.

If you spend more than 5 minutes looking for info on your topic, stop what you’re doing and IM or SMS a librarian – Text send USTLibraries <your message here> to 246246.  We cn save u tym.

For those of you who wonder how social media sites make money

I am always telling my two young children not to say ‘stupid’ which is hard for me because sometimes that word is very appropriate. The most recent case in point is from an article from the Silicon Alley Insider about all those stupid (yes I said it) applications that live on Facebook.   What I love about this article  is that it contains a series of 41 screen shots of how to play a game like Fishville.  I was always curious about the look, purpose and appeal of these games, but I absolutely refuse to sign myself up.

But don’t be fooled by the simple graphics and smiling fish!

What is not stupid but instead kind of frightening is how much money companies like Zynga make through their games and by creating networks that other, even more unscrupulous advertisers can join.  My newest, most favorite technology business blog TechCrunch has covered this phenomenon in a series of in-depth articles that are a fascinating dissection of how these companies operate.

It almost makes you nostagic for the days of the annoying pop up windows.

New database of full text Decision Science journals

Published by the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science, Informs PubsOnline is a database of 12 full text management journals that contains articles which focus on decision sciences, information systems, and supply chain management. It may be smaller than other business article databases, but this specialized collection of operations research journals contains articles that can complement articles found in more general management databases. Users can conduct author or keyword searches and can choose to search in multiple or single selected journals. The full text extends back to 2001 and the articles include all table and graphs and references with some links to other full text articles.
