3 presentations by Catholic Studies Master of Arts students July 21 in OSF Library

All are invited to attend . . .

Catholic Studies Master of Arts essay presentations will be given Thursday, July 21, in Room 108, Presentations will begin at 5 p.m.

The graduate student presenters and their master’s essay titles are:

Tim Regan, “The Warm Wind: Climate, Geography and Social Change in the High Middle Ages”

Renee Burke-Drazba, “Peter Maurin’s Easy Essays: Tools for Evangelization and ‘Blowing the Dynamite’ of the Church”

Sister Anne Frances Klein, O.P. “Dom Hubert Van Zeller, O.S.B.”

All are invited to poster session on Dogs, July 6, in O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library

From 11am – Noon on Wednesday, July 6, all in the campus community are cordially invited to attend a special presentation of research posters created by students from the Aquinas Scholars Honors Seminar: “Dogs!!! Environment, Society, and Representation.” You’ll find the posters displayed in the the O’Shaughnessy Room of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library, Room 108.

Students will be available to answer questions about their research, which focused on topics ranging from dog park use to service dog training and how people characterize their relationship with their dogs.

Snacks and beverages will be provided — we hope you will stop in!

Online room reservation systems for group study spaces in library under consideration

UST Libraries’ Food For Fines program helps Franciscan Brothers of Peace

Nathan Wunrow, circulation supervisor at the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library, has successfully managed for the second year a “Food for Fines” program whereby patrons owing late fees on their library materials pay the fines, not with money, but with food donations instead.

The program began on the first day of Library Week in mid-April and continued through the end of spring semester. These donations helped alleviate $1,588.95 in fines.

The participating UST Libraries took in a total of 811.5 lbs. of canned food and it has been delivered to the Franciscan Brothers of Peace. Last year’s donation was a smaller 288 lbs, however the duration of the program was just one week long.

Nathan says: “Thanks go to Paul Hietpas of Physical Plant for letting us use his scale, and thank you to everyone who supported this program.”

Network Outages in OSF Library May 24-26

Monday May 23 Update: 2nd floor was completed on Sunday rather than Tuesday.

Tuesday’s work will include COJO and Special Collections rather than waiting until Thursday for those areas.

The National Jukebox

Hey, this is pretty cool: the Library of Congress has released the National Jukebox, which provides free access to some vintage music from the LOC and other collections. Users can browse or search by genre and artist, access, create, and submit playlists, etc. The “Jukebox Day by Day” feature lets you see what was recorded each day of the year.

The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives.

Library’s Coffee Shop will close on May 20

Coffee Bené in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library will close for the summer at 3pm on Friday, May 20. It will reopen in the fall in time for the new school year. We thank you for enjoying our coffee shop with us and helping to make it a success. We will be joining you in taking the extra steps to visit Coffee Bené by Davanni’s throughout the summer.

Finals Stress Spa Retreat in O’Shaughnessy Room, Monday, May 16

The Wellness Center will hold a Finals Stress Spa Retreat for students from 1 to 3 p.m. on Study Monday, May 16, in the O’Shaughnessy Room, Room 108, in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center.

The stress spa retreat includes free professional chair massages, aromatherapy oils, soothing music, coloring, fresh fruit platter, cocoa and other snacks.

A sign-up sheet for the massages will be posted 10 minutes before the hour (12:50 and 1:50) at the stress spa location. Massage sign ups are on a first-come, first-served basis. Choose between a chair massage or hand massage.

UST Libraries Media Collection soon to be on the move . . .

The library media collection will move from the third floor to the first floor of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center on Monday, May 23. Anticipated shutdown dates are May 20-24.

Media services will begin at the new location in the northeast corner of the circulation area on Wednesday, May 25. Signs will direct visitors to the new location.

This move will make the collection more accessible and visible to the St. Thomas community. Soon after the collection has been relocated, Room 309 will be open for additional, much-needed study space.

Karen Batdorf will stay in the circulation department and continue to provide circulation and reservation services for the Media Resources collection.

Cindy Badilla-Melendez will continue as Media Resources librarian for the collection. Her new office will eventually be Room 114, O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center. She will move there during the summer. For the immediate future, you can still find Cindy in 309A.
