TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES!!

I’m sorry to report that nearly all library systems are experiencing severe technical difficulties today. That’s the brief version.

The long version of this story is that we pay for the services of a company called Proquest. From them we get Summon, GET IT, and literally hundreds of thousands of other pieces of content that make up the modern library. Over the weekend Proquest did an upgrade to its system, which is typical and happens with great regularity. However, atypical is that something went horribly wrong with this upgrade. It’s taken down most of our functionality.

Please be patient as we look to Proquest to solve this rather large problem. Let us know how we can help, but be prepared to hear the answer “just wait it out.” Ugh. And sorry.

Here is the latest usage report for UST Research Online, the university’s online scholarly research repository.

Monthly Readership Totals:
Last month, UST Research Online had 11249 full-text downloads and 23 new submissions were posted, bringing the total works in the repository to 1566.
University of St. Thomas, Minnesota scholarship was read by 1534 institutions across 146 countries.

Factors Influencing Student Placement Decisions in Elementary School Assignments (500 downloads)

The sky’s the limit: An activity for teaching project management: an experiential learning activity (347 downloads)

The most popular publications were:
University of St. Thomas Law Journal (3614 downloads)

noonartsound: O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library May 3 at noon

It’s the final noonartsound of the academic year and we look forward to seeing you Tuesday, May 3 at noon!
The art: Shelly Nordtorp-Madson will speak on various romantic periods and will compare and contrast the Victorian period with modern times, WWII, turn of the 20th century, 1970’s, the present.
The sound: Chris Kachian will present love songs – strictly American and from 30’s to 40’s – lots of jazz – and always a surprise or two.
Come to the O’Shaughnessy Room in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library. Free and open to all!

Poetry on the Patio at Noon on Tuesday April 26

It’s April and it’s National Poetry Month! Plan to take your break over the lunch hour on the patio of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library on Tuesday, April 26 at Noon! As soon as the carillon stops singing, we’ll begin the poetry reading and you’ll hear from several of your colleagues across campus, including Linda Baughman, Carol Wilkie, Jessica Gjerde, Kristi Ames, Ciara Parks, retiree and French scholar Mary Lou Wolsey, students Christopher Vance and Jennifer Gish. Hosted by Director of Libraries, Dan Gjelten, this annual event is a favorite among poetry lovers and people who just like to discover what poems are favorites of their co-workers and friends. Summit Singers and Cadenza in the Great Hall, April 28 at 8pm

All are invited to an evening of fun and some really great singing by the very popular St. Thomas student a capella groups Summit Singers and Cadenza! On Thursday, April 28, we will look for you in the Great Hall on the second floor of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library around 8pm. Save some room after supper that night for some snacks and a little root beer float.

Library Week Book Sale in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey opens at Noon, Monday, April 11

Visit the O’Shaughnessy Room each day during Library Week Monday – Friday, April 11- 15. We’re open for business from Noon to 6pm each day. This extremely popular Library Week event features books from a variety of categories, different every year! We are especially loaded with history and geography this year, along with our traditionally large literature selections.

On Monday, the first day of the sale, we always treat members of the University Community to a discount! All are welcome to shop the book sale and we hope you will find treasures to take home.

Hardcovers are $3.00 each paperbacks are $2.00. On Friday of Library Week, shop the $5-Bag sale!

Guitar Ensemble in the Great Hall Friday, April 15

The St. Thomas Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Joan Griffith, will perform from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15 in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library in the Great Hall on second floor.

The Guitar Ensemble plays many styles of music, from classical to jazz, and some original music by St. Thomas students and faculty.

The setting is a beautiful one, all are welcome, and listeners may come and go throughout. Light refreshments will be served.

Library Week Kicks off 8th Annual Food Drive

Donations from 2015 Food Drive – thank you!

The St. Thomas Libraries’ 8^th Annual Food Drive begins during Library Week, Monday, April 11^th, and will run until the end of the semester, May 31^st, 2016. Since the Library’s first drive in 2009, the St. Thomas community has donated more than 3,700 pounds of food!

This year’s donation recipient will be Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul.

For library patrons who have overdue fines we will waive fines in exchange for canned food (1 can = $2 in fines).

We do, however, invite and encourage any and everyone to donate to this program, regardless of overdue fines.

Please bring your food donations to the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Circulation Desk beginning Monday of Library Week, April 11.

The food drive runs through the end of May.
