PsycINFO, et al. TRIALS

Currently we subscribe to PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, PsycBOOKS, and PsycTESTS directly from the American Psychological Association. However, other vendors provide different interfaces. Are they easier and clearer to use?

Which vendor presents PsycINFO in the best possible way: Ebsco, ProQuest, or APA?

I love PsycINFO. It’s definitely a librarian’s database! It targets searches, letting you find exactly what you want. It has a fantastic thesaurus to help you choose the best words to use, limits by age group, methodology, and topic area. Let’s see if the other interfaces highlight these great tools better than APA does.

New Tommies! New Resources!

As UST welcomes new students to campus – whether first year, international, or transfer students – the Music & Media Collections at OSF Library cannot wait to share the many resources we have available for these new (or returning) Tommies. Found in room 104A in O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library, the Music & Media Collections has over 25,000 physical DVD and CD titles available for check out as well as numerous streaming databases featuring academic films and interviews, documentaries, foreign films, major motion pictures, and everything in between. Viewing stations, listening/view rooms, and external disc drives available for check out make it easy to utilize our resources. If you have been to the Music & Media Collections in the past, make sure to drop by this semester to browse the many new titles that were added throughout the summer.

New Additions to Swank Streaming Service

If your summer of Netflix-binging has left you desperately searching for a good movie, Swank has your solution. Swank is a video streaming service available for free to all UST students, faculty, and staff through the Music & Media Collections and we recently added 41 great movies to its online collection

These new films include many recent hits spanning multiple genres to match any movie night you are planning. Adventure and comedy can be found in the hilarious coming-of-age story The Edge of Seventeen or Newt Scamander’s magical missteps in Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them. Get your fill of drama, romance, and heartbreak in the films The Danish Girl, Sense & Sensibility, or Things to Come. Seeking action and suspense? The crime drama Dheepan or the horror/thriller Get Out are sure to excite.

Swank can be found in the list of “Online Video Resources” on the UST Films page and easily accessed on or off-campus by signing in with your St. Thomas username and password. Follow the arrows to access the database.

Tales from the Archives — 40th Anniversary of Coeducation

Did you know that University of St. Thomas was officially an all-male school in its undergraduate program for the first 92 years of its history? It wasn’t until September 1977 that women were first admitted as full members of the undergraduate class. While the school’s administrators anticipated that only 100 – 125 women would enroll in the first year, St. Thomas welcomed 221 women students for the Fall Semester.

To accommodate the women undergraduates, the physical campus underwent a bit of a facelift prior to their arrival. Bathrooms and locker rooms were remodeled in existing buildings to provide spaces for women. But the most visible change to the campus landscape was an addition to Murray Hall. Constructed during the summer of 1977, housing for up to 94 female students was created.

The transition to a coeducational institution went very smoothly by all accounts. By the 1980-81 academic year, 40 percent of the undergraduate student body were women. That same year, Rachel Wobschall was voted the by the student body to be the first female Tommie Award (formerly the “Mr. Tommy” award) winner.

Book a Media Viewing/Listening Room for your next group project!

The second UST summer session just began and before you know it, so will fall classes! Many courses require students to view or listen to content which will contribute to assignments, tests, or class discussion. However, students often face the problem of where this content should be viewed, especially if it must be done as a group. The Music & Media Collection in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library makes it convenient to watch a film or listen to audio with a group by offering two Viewing/Listening rooms, now available for reservation! Booking one is as simple as booking a group study room at the library – simply visit the “Films” tab within the OSF Library homepage, select “Book A Media Viewing/Listening Room,” choose your date, duration, and which room you would like to reserve, then reserve a room using your UST student information.

Be sure to take advantage of one of the many fantastic resources offered by the Music & Media Collections and ace your next group project!

Summer Movies

Although the first calendar day of summer was not long ago, it is fair to say that the season is in full swing. Just as beaches, vacations, and the occasional sunburn are staples of summer, so are the highly anticipated summer blockbusters. It is a time for action, comedy, and adventure to draw in the crowds. However, if you want to see fantastic films without battling a crowd, the Music & Media Collections at the St. Thomas O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library is the place to be.

In the form of both physical DVD copies and thousands of online streaming options, now is your opportunity to catch up on the summer blockbusters you might have missed. These are only a few of the great films, documentaries, and TV series the Music & Media Collections has to offer all summer long. As everyone departs from campus and begins their summer jobs, classes, and vacations, don’t forget that the Music & Media Collections is still capable of meeting your needs from home! Because of our continuously updated streaming services, members of the St. Thomas community have access to thousands of films and music through our databases.

If you find yourself in need of a film for class or simply have some free time on your hands, you can find our Online Video and Music Sources right through the St. Thomas Libraries website. And if you still need to come in to the Music & Media Collections for face-to-face help, effective May 22^nd our hours will be changed as follows:

Music and Media Collections Hours:
Monday – Thursday: 8am to 8pm
Friday: 8am to 5pm
Saturday – Sunday: Closed

Go-to films

We all have those go-to films. The ones that we have seen dozens of times and still crave to watch regularly. Whatever your reason is for gravitating towards films, I often find that these are a good representation of one’s personality. My go-to films tend to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, or there’s usually something about the flawed main characters that I find myself extremely able to relate to. Here are my top three recommended go-to films, that we have available right here in the Media & Music Collections:

Featured Film: Pride & Prejudice Call #: PR4034 .P75 2006
Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman living in Hartfordshire with his overbearing wife and 5 daughters. The family’s future happiness and security is dependent on the daughters making good marriages. Life is uneventful until the arrival in the neighborhood of the rich gentleman Mr. Bingley, who rents a large house so he can spend the summer in the country. Mr. Bingley brings with him his sister and the dashing, rich, but proud Mr. Darcy. Love soon buds for one of the Bennet sisters, while another sister may have jumped to a hasty prejudgment.

A rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great chef despite his family’s wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unwanted visitor in the kitchen of one of Paris’ most exclusive restaurants, Remy forms an unlikely partnership with Linguini, the garbage boy, who inadvertently discovers Remy’s amazing talents.

For Tom, it was love at first sight when Summer Finn walked into the greeting card company where he worked. Summer is the new administrative assistant. Soon, Tom knows that Summer is the woman with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life. Although Summer does not believe in relationships or boyfriends, Tom and Summer become more than just friends.
