Students in the real estate programs at St. Thomas (Bachelor of Science degree in Real Estate and Master of Science degree in Real Estate) are exposed to numerous real world real estate projects throughout their degree programs.  This gives them a chance to not only learn the real estate theory but to be able to also apply that theory.  The NAIOP University Challenge gives students the opportunity to work as a consulting team to develop or redevelop a property.

This year, five schools including UST, The University of Wisconsin Madison, St. Cloud State University, University of Northern Iowa and Marquette University will compete in the 2011 University Real Estate Challenge.  Students have been working on the redevelopment of the Oakdale Mall site throughout the spring semester.  On Thursday, April 7th, each team will have the opportunity to present their ideas to a team of judges including:

  • Joe Ihrke of Carlson Real Estate
  • Murray Kornberg of CBRE Capital Markets
  • Gabe Philibert of U.S. Bank National Association
  • Mark Reiling of Cassidy Turley
  • Bob Streetar of City of Oakdale
  • NAIOP Corporate Chairman Alex Klatskin of Forsgate Industrial Partners (in New Jersey)

Curious about what the students envision for the 18-acre Oakdale Mall?  Will it be professional office, office flex, tech or showroom, medical office, In-line retail, market-rate apartments, restaurant or bank pad, or some other creative use?

Join NAIOP at the University of St. Thomas Minneapolis Campus from 3:30-5:15 to hear the top three student groups present their ideas.  For more information on attending this event, please visit the NAIOP Minnesota website.
