What’s the difference between business program advisors and faculty advisors?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Your business program advisor is housed in 128 McNeely Hall to answer questions for you regarding what classes you’ll need to complete to graduate with a business concentration. (Joanie Kyllo sees students with last names A-E; Betsy Lofgren has F-K; Heather English has L-Q; and Jesse Langer advises students R-Z.) We can help you with transfer courses, study abroad questions, prerequisites, petitioning courses, directing you to other resources on campus, etc. Your faculty advisor is the only person who can remove an advising hold for you. If you are a junior or senior you’ll have a faculty advisor who teaches classes in your area of business (if you have more than one area of business, you’ll have a faculty advisor from each), who can give you advice on careers, internships and other opportunities to strengthen your academic career. Freshmen and sophomores are assigned to a faculty advisor who may or may not be in the Opus College of Business, and therefore we recommend that you meet with your business program advisor early and often to ensure that you’re on the right track for a business concentration.

To make an appointment with your business program advisor at any time, click here, stop by our office in 128 McNeely Hall, or call 651-962-5544. Faculty advisors have their own system, so you should contact yours directly to make an appointment.

Focused on energizing the entrepreneurial spirit of UST students across campuses and colleges, the competition will challenge students to develop a business concept that has the potential to become a viable, high-growth business. Teams that submit the winning business competition in each of two divisions (undergraduate and graduate) will receive $10,000 scholarships.

The Fowler Business Concept Competition will be held next month. It is open to all UST students registered for the fall 2009 semester, including undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Students will compete in teams of at least two but no more than five, registered in Undergraduate or Graduate divisions. Undergraduate division teams must comprise all undergraduate students. Teams registering in the Graduate division must have at least one currently registered UST graduate student (master’s or doctoral level) on the team. Other team members may be currently registered UST undergraduate students.

Information sessions about the competition are scheduled at 5 p.m. today, Sept. 23, in Room 152, Terrence Murphy Hall; 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the Koch Commons Fireside Room; or 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Room 355, Terrence Murphy Hall. Initial submissions are due Oct. 15. Final competition and winner selection will be held Oct. 30.

The beginning of another school year…

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

As the days get cooler and the leaves start to change, plans change from summer fun to group projects and class readings- and now blogs. What is the purpose of all these different blogs you might wonder? UST has a new one, and we do too.
Our hope with this blog is to keep you up to date with what is going on in the Opus College of Business and what you can do to remain active in your college career and stay on track for graduation. Rather than inundating you with emails every time something you should know pops into our head, we will post it to the blog. It will remain there forever, so anytime you need to find the answer, it will be there, instead of in the recycling bin!
Also take this opportunity to post comments or questions on the blog. Ask questions of the advisors or share ideas and answers with your fellow peers. And check back at least every week, if not more often, to find out what we are up to!
