Why do I have two advisors?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Business students are fortunate to have two advisors to help them navigate their time at UST. As your business program advisors, we are here to answer your questions regarding what classes you’ll need to graduate with a business concentration. We can also help you with transfer courses, study abroad questions, petitioning courses, directing you to other campus resources, etc.

Your faculty advisor teaches in the area of business that you are majoring in. Therefore, he/she will be most helpful in discussing your career goals, internships, electives you should take, and other opportunities to maximize your academic career. They are also the only ones who can remove your advising hold.

Your faculty advisor may require you to vist your business program advisor in 128 McNeely Hall before meeting with them. To set up an appointment, please click here: http://www.stthomas.edu/ocbappointments.

Business program advisors are:
Joanie Kyllo, who advises students with last names A-E
Betsy Lofgren, who advises students with last names F-K
Heather English, who advises students with last names L-R
Jesse Langer, who advises students with last names S-Z

DSCI to become OPMT

Friday, February 26th, 2010

globe peopleBeginning September 1, 2010, the Decision Sciences department will change its name to Operations Management. This means that all courses which begin with the abbreviation DSCI will begin with the abbreviation OPMT beginning September 1. All business students must take DSCI 310 – which will now be OPMT 310. All Operations Management majors who are required to take DSCI 320, 330, 340, 350, & 480 will be required to take OPMT 320, 33, 340, 350, & 480. If you have already taken a DSCI course, you will be allowed to use this course for its OPMT equivalent. If you have any questions, contact your Business Program Advisor.

What’s the difference between business program advisors and faculty advisors?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Your business program advisor is housed in 128 McNeely Hall to answer questions for you regarding what classes you’ll need to complete to graduate with a business concentration. (Joanie Kyllo sees students with last names A-E; Betsy Lofgren has F-K; Heather English has L-Q; and Jesse Langer advises students R-Z.) We can help you with transfer courses, study abroad questions, prerequisites, petitioning courses, directing you to other resources on campus, etc. Your faculty advisor is the only person who can remove an advising hold for you. If you are a junior or senior you’ll have a faculty advisor who teaches classes in your area of business (if you have more than one area of business, you’ll have a faculty advisor from each), who can give you advice on careers, internships and other opportunities to strengthen your academic career. Freshmen and sophomores are assigned to a faculty advisor who may or may not be in the Opus College of Business, and therefore we recommend that you meet with your business program advisor early and often to ensure that you’re on the right track for a business concentration.

To make an appointment with your business program advisor at any time, click here, stop by our office in 128 McNeely Hall, or call 651-962-5544. Faculty advisors have their own system, so you should contact yours directly to make an appointment.
