Super Bowl Sunday has become more than just a day of (great) football and partying with family and friends. To businesses, it’s a $3.8 million investment in a 30-second spot and hoping that somehow the message will be delivered in the midst of the clutter. To consumers, it’s about which ad is the funniest or most memorable.
To Twin Cities marketers, this year it was about watching the ads, taking mental notes, analyzing every aspect of the spot, and talking about them at an American Marketing Association Post-game Roast days after with executives from the Cities’ top marketing firms—Tina Wilcox, CEO and creative director from Black; Eric Husband, executive creative director at Cole + McVoy; Michael Hart, founder and creative director of Mono; and Dan Armstrong, a freelance copy writer; moderated by Bill Kruse, executive producer at Pixel Farm. The event was appropriately held at the Vikings’ Gridiron Club at the Metrodome.
Without further ado, here are the top and bottom three from the panel and their reasons.

On August 11, a celebration of sorts returns to Minneapolis. The Alphabet Bash, brainchild of four bright young communication professionals six years ago, will turn the Epic Center into a temporary Mecca for the movers, shakers and wanna-bes of the Twin Cities message machines. The evening, while formatted as a loosely scripted mix and mingle, takes a tremendous amount of organization and planning – particularly coordinating the efforts of the eight associations now involved. The “Bash” always promises and delivers great food, a fun atmosphere, and most assuredly the best networking in the professional communication community calendar.
I’m not just touting the event because the UST MBC program is one of the two primary sponsors. We are engaged because this event brings together local business communication professionals from multiple disciplines on one night. It’s imperative that we are there, and should be for anyone interested in building a network of like-minded professionals – for fun and profit!
For those who don’t feel like they know many people, and worry about meeting new folks, here are a couple of tips. (more…)

AMA, IABC, MDMA, MIMA? If you’re not familiar with these acronyms, don’t worry–you can learn all about them at the 2010 Alphabet Bash. Members of Minnesota’s top professional organizations in the areas of marketing, advertising, and communication will gather this Thursday, August 12, for an evening of networking in downtown Minneapolis.
The Alphabet Bash is sponsored by the Master of Business Communication program in the Opus College of Business. Registration is open to the public. Whether you’re already working in the marketing/ advertising/ communication fields or hope to make a career change into one of those areas, the Alphabet Bash can provide you with great opportunities to connect with industry professionals.

Earlier this month the Minnesota AMA hosted a presentation by two consumer strategists from Iconoculture, a consumer research and advisory company that “integrates consumer information from multiple data sources and combines it with expert interpretation and analysis by the industry’s largest Advisory Services team to produce targeted insights.”
Located in downtown Minneapolis, but with a global reach, having a company like this in your backyard is definitely a bonus and the insights that came from there presentation were definitely valuable to any business person, not just marketers. The presentation focused on eight big ideas for 2010, with comparisons to their previous “big ideas” and predictions of how these will shift in the year(s) ahead. Here’s a preview video:

And here, direct from Iconoculture is a quick summary of the eight big ideas divided out by some key values as they delivered them in the presentation. (more…)

Last week my colleague Clark Gregor and I attended the Minnesota American Marketing Association (AMA) Marketing Mixer at Elsie’s in Northeast Minneapolis. Although there was no bowling involved, we enjoyed meeting a wide variety of marketing professionals from across the Twin Cities. The UST Full-time and Evening MBA programs are sponsoring the Minnesota AMA’s marketing socials this year, and we hope to see some of our blog readers at future events! (more…)

Karl D. Speak, President, Brand Tool Box
The Minnesota AMA chapter invited Karl Speak of Brand Tool Box to discuss personal brand building at St. Thomas this week and he gave a very intriguing presentation.
Brand, says Speak, means “consistently delivering distinctive value to customers.” It is far more than just marketing, which he illustrated as the tip of an iceberg: the part under water backs up the image we see. You could view your personal brand as your reputation, but Speak broke it down into three principles: (more…)

I just returned from the American Marketing Association’s Symposium on The Marketing of Higher Education, in Boston. It was a very interesting conference, and by far the focus of the presentations was social media. I can’t count how many times I heard, “if you aren’t on Twitter yet, get on Twitter.” (UST is already on Twitter, fortunately, tweeting as @USTbusiness, among others [I am @clarkr]. We also have pages on Facebook and LinkedIn, and coming in 2010, a new alumni social network that interfaces with those and more.)
All of this new media may be threatening to some, but I definitely saw evidence of others embracing it…to an extreme, like Michigan’s Walsh College which has taken to various viral marketing techniques…sending people in yellow striped suits out around town and posting videos to YouTube. The lesson from most of the presentations was that marketing/communication with prospective students is now much more two-way. For UST this isn’t anything new, we’ve always worked on providing a personal touch in getting to know applicants and students while they are here. Now we just have more ways to do it:
