Flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks

The busy fall recruitment season has started!  It is an exciting year for the admissions office as we begin recruiting students for the 2013 incoming class.  Students, alumni, faculty and staff will be visiting campuses and cities around the country during the next three months informing prospective students about the University of St. Thomas School of Law.

We have so much to talk about including our Dean’s Search, our recent Scholarly Impact rankings, the Law School Students Survey of Student Engagement results, our beautiful new clinic space and the wonderful additions to our clinical program!  We will be traveling to 26 states and Canada attending law school fairs, forums and private events.  Please visit our Recruitment Calendar to see if we will be coming to your area.

Santa Claus House, North Pole, AK

During the past two weeks I have been to Kansas, Missouri, Georgia and Alaska.  It was great to return to the campuses and cities.  During my travels so far I have had exciting and exhausting moments including the worst flight of my life from Kansas City to Atlanta, a prop plane in Alaska, meeting a real reindeer at Santa’s house in North Pole – AK, some great BBQ food in Kansas,  a red eye home to Minneapolis, and meeting two prospective students (Anna and Jason) in Atlanta who have already been to visit UST!

Over the next two weeks UST representatives will be in Michigan, Florida, Washington DC, Minnesota and Texas.  We would enjoy meeting you and telling you more about UST Law.  Please stop by the events and say hello!

September 2011 Recruitment Travels

Published on: Friday, September 30th, 2011

During the past month I’ve been traveling across the country (and to Toronto) to visit with prospective law students.  I’ve attended Law School Admission Council (LSAC) Forums in Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles and law school fairs in Alaska, Kansas City, Michigan, Washington, DC and Iowa.  The students I’ve talked with have been very curious and excited to hear about our generous scholarship retention policy and that our application fee has been waived for all 2011-2012 online applicants! The Weekend Without Trains, Part I

Well, in case you weren’t aware, public transportation in Italy is not very…reliable. Schedules change without notice, machinery breaks down, strikes occur, bus drivers take smoke breaks in the middle of a route…you get the idea. This will become a problem later in this post.

For now, we’re going to celebrate my birthday. This past Saturday my Golden Year finally came to a close and I turned two dozen years old. Huzzah.  I’d really wanted to celebrate by taking a large group of friends (hopefully all willing to buy me drinks) out to Trastaccio, apparently Rome’s hottest clubbing neighborhood. However, with most of my most club-happy classmates in Croatia for the weekend, I finally gave up the stay-out-all-night-partying idea around 1:30 am Friday night and just hit up a local bar instead, where I treated myself to my second tiramisu` of the evening (it was delicious). Learners to Leaders

Last night I attended the Learners to Leaders event hosted by the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business.  Each student that was in attendance was nominated to participate in the program because of their excellence and interest in continuing their education after completing their undergraduate degrees.  We were welcomed by the Dean of the Business School, Christopher Puto, Ph. D. and the Assistant Dean of the MBA programs, Bill Woodson.  (more…)

It’s great to be back in Minneapolis!

After 25,964 miles, 60 nights in hotels, 54 events, 30 flights, 28 states, 22 rental cars, 3 delayed or cancelled flights, 2 sightings of the Dalai Lama, 1 engagement proposal, 1 bed bug and 1 warning by the police in Bloomington, Indiana to slow down… I am finally back in Minneapolis!!

This recruitment season has been not only fun and eventful, but very successful.  I met some fantastic students across the country and can’t wait to keep in touch with them during the law school application process.  (more…)

Last Monday I flew from Champaign, IL to Raleigh, NC. Tuesday I visited North Carolina State – Raleigh for a law fair.  The students were so great and went around to many different schools to learn about their programs.  I talked to a few students who were particularly interested in coming to a climate with four definitive seasons.

All across the Midwest

Published on: Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

I was sad to be missing the beautiful fall weather in Minnesota, but last week it felt like I was back home while visiting many amazing campuses across the Midwest.  I visited Notre Dame, the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Indiana University, Chicago for the LSAC Forum, and the University of Illinois – Champaign/Urbana.

I had one of our recent graduates, Candice, join me at the Chicago Forum on Saturday.  The prospective students enjoyed hearing about her experiences at UST Law.  They especially liked hearing about her mentors and the fact that she came to Minnesota to attend UST from Utah (more…)

And then I saw the Dalai Lama!!

The past few weeks have been more than eventful with traveling galore, but also catching a cold, seeing my first bed bug, having my luggage lost and breaking my cell phone/GPS.  These small obstacles caused some anxiety but I’ve found that things always seem to work out if you remain calm and have fun.

I have traveled across our beautiful country and met the most amazing people!!  (more…)

Painting of Ute Indians at Olpin Center

Painting of Ute Indians at Olpin Union

I just returned from a trip to the University of Utah, Utah Valley University, and Brigham Young University. The weather was perfect and very similar to what we have been enjoying in Minnesota over the past several weeks.  At the first event at the University of Utah, I was in the ballroom at the A. Ray Olpin Union, the university community center.  On the wall next to me was a painting of the Ute Indians.  The student center was bustling with prospective law students. I talked to several students who are interested in visiting Minnesota and learning more about UST Law. Also invited were students from Utah State, Southern Utah University, Westminster College, Weber State University, and Salt Lake Community College.  As a special treat, there were vendors in Olpin Union selling hand-made jewelry.
