Members of the UST Law Community Participate in the Race for Justice

Published on: Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Several members of the UST Law Community participated in the Race for Justice over the weekend. This race supports the Loan Repayment Assistance Program of Minnesota (LRAP) by consistently raising over $20,000 each year. LRAP helps to meet the needs of low income Minnesotans across the state by subsidizing education debts for dedicated, low-paid public interest attorneys. For more information about LRAP, click here.

Winter Hats from the Admissions Office

Nicki L., Current 1L UST Law Student, Guest Blogger

During the Spring of my senior year of college, many of the law schools that I had applied for sent me various small gifts and hand written notes.  The University of St. Thomas- School of Law sent me the most unique gift: a hat. I knew that hats are essential to any winter wardrobe, but I did not know when I would ever wear this particular hat.

Allison and Nicki at the Fall Public Service Day

I, along with other law students, finally got our chance to wear the famous 1L hats during Fall Public Service Day.  At UST Law, students are required to complete 50 hours of public service.  I believe this is one of the most socially minded and essential graduation requirements.  The Public Service Board at UST Law helps students by organizing public service opportunities.

In the Fall, we volunteered with Great River Greening by planting trees.  It was an enjoyable experience to get outside, plant some trees, and beautify the surrounding community.  This Spring, students are working with Habitat for Humanity for Public Service Day.  Maybe we will get the chance to wear our 1L hats once again!

Congratulations to Dean Robert Vischer

The Admissions staff is excited to congratulate Robert Vischer on his selection as Dean at UST Law. A press release about his appointment is here. Admissions works closely with the Dean throughout the application cycle and we have been lucky to work with current interim Dean Neil Hamilton, and his predecessor Tom Mengler. We look forward to working with Rob this year.  (And he was a great sport to pose for a photo in Grace’s office wearing some of our UST Law Admissions gear!)

Flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks

The busy fall recruitment season has started!  It is an exciting year for the admissions office as we begin recruiting students for the 2013 incoming class.  Students, alumni, faculty and staff will be visiting campuses and cities around the country during the next three months informing prospective students about the University of St. Thomas School of Law.

We have so much to talk about including our Dean’s Search, our recent Scholarly Impact rankings, the Law School Students Survey of Student Engagement results, our beautiful new clinic space and the wonderful additions to our clinical program!  We will be traveling to 26 states and Canada attending law school fairs, forums and private events.  Please visit our Recruitment Calendar to see if we will be coming to your area.

Santa Claus House, North Pole, AK

During the past two weeks I have been to Kansas, Missouri, Georgia and Alaska.  It was great to return to the campuses and cities.  During my travels so far I have had exciting and exhausting moments including the worst flight of my life from Kansas City to Atlanta, a prop plane in Alaska, meeting a real reindeer at Santa’s house in North Pole – AK, some great BBQ food in Kansas,  a red eye home to Minneapolis, and meeting two prospective students (Anna and Jason) in Atlanta who have already been to visit UST!

Over the next two weeks UST representatives will be in Michigan, Florida, Washington DC, Minnesota and Texas.  We would enjoy meeting you and telling you more about UST Law.  Please stop by the events and say hello!

Felix and Courtney and their cleaning supplies.

The week before orientation the Admissions office took a group of incoming students to the Ronald McDonald house to volunteer. One of our 2L students, Max, who is on the Public Service Board set up the events for us.  After touring the facilities we helped deep clean kitchens for the 48 families that are staying there while their children are in treatment. We also helped disinfect the castle in the children’s play room.  (more…)

I attended an award ceremony on Thursday, April 19th where one of our current 3L students, Alex Campion, and one of our incoming law students, Lisa Johnson, both won the Pauline Lambert Women’s Advocacy Award for taking initiative in challenging problems that exist around gender issues. The awards were presented by the University Advocates for Women and Equity.  Our 3L, Alex, worked with a group of other law students to create the Center for Girl’s Leadership. www.centerforgirlsleadership.org

The mission statement reads, “Inspiring Girls Today to Lead Tomorrow” with a vision statement of “Leaders are not just defined by their titles or positions, but also by their actions. The Center for Girls’ Leadership believes any girl can be a leader at home, at school, and in her community.  We seek to empower girls today to pave a strong pathway to equality in leadership.  Girls are encouraged to create something extraordinary and to inspire others to do the same.”   The nonprofit organization hosted their first event on Saturday, February 25th at UST.  They invited high school and college women to the leadership workshop.  (more…)

2012 MJF Chili Cook-off winners, Debbie and Josh

Last Thursday afternoon the Minnesota Justice Foundation held its annual chili cook-off in the UST law atirum.  Students, staff and faculty cooked chili and judged the competition.   There were around 15 crockpots with unique chili and many hungry UST Law community members who attended the event.  The judges were Professor Organ, Professor Berg and one MJF student representative.

The winner of the Golden Ladle for 2012 was the Irish Chili made by Debbie and Josh (both 1L students).  The secret ingredient was potato pieces, which Debbie told us before the judging began that she added them by mistake!

All proceeds help fund the Minnesota Justice Foundation summer clerkship. Some of the chili names were Rummy in your Tummy, Dante’s Inferno and Chili James.  Chili ingredients ranged from vegan to pheasant meat.

Next year is sure to be a great competition as many of the chilies that placed in the top 3 were made by 1L students.

UST Law Student Government

The Student Government at UST Law has had a busy year!  Each Wednesday morning the elected officers meet in the Board of Governors Room to discuss student life at UST.  They are the governing body over the student organizations for the law school.

Student Government 2011-2012

Students from each of the 1L, 2L and 3L classes have a number of representatives on student government so all student concerns and voices can be heard.  Committees within the student government act as advisors and help the faculty and staff on issues concerning Career and Professional Development, Curriculum, Finance, Mentor Externship, Mission and Sports/Recreation.

They plan a number of fun all school activities throughout the year including peer mentor events, Town Halls, the Holiday Party and Alumni panel lunches.

You may be wondering about the career resources available at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.  The primary resource that pops in my mind is the Office of Career and Professional Development (CPD), which is located in the Student Services Suite.  The CPD staff helps prepare our students for their job searches, interviews, networking events and other recruitment opportunities.  Besides taking personal appointments daily to review resumes, cover letters and offer career guidance, our CPD office plans educational sessions for our students.
