Criminal Law Association (CLA) Update

Hello!  We are the Criminal Law Association (CLA)!  With over 125 members, interested in the field of criminal law, in one aspect or another, the CLA board arranges for social gatherings and events involving criminal law current events or professionals from all across the field.

This year (2010-2011) the CLA has provided a large opportunity for involvement and learning experiences.  From 1L students on our board of officers, to assisting in the planning of the largest public event held at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, ever.  (more…)

Public Service Day at UST Law

Fall Public Service Day Volunteers

The Fall Public Service Day had roughly 60 participants where students went to one of three different work sites.  A group painted walls at a YWCA daycare facility, others gathered seeds for Great River Greening’s conservation efforts, and others picked grapes at a winery to raise money for Twin Cities Rebuilding Together.  The Twin Cities Rebulding Together program helps improve the living conditions of low-income home owners. 

This Spring the Public Service Day will be on March 5th where we expect to take between 50 and 70 students to various Habitat for Humanity worksites.  To learn more about the Public Service Board, please visit our website.

Faculty perspective on the UST Law community

The University of St. Thomas School of Law attaches great importance to its faculty’s legal scholarship and writing.  That emphasis is reflected in the high level of the faculty’s productivity and the quality of its publications.  But unlike many other law schools that place such a premium on scholarship, St. Thomas also expects that its faculty be committed, effective and accomplished teachers.  We aim to be, and are, a school that is friendly to its students — that expects much from them but that gives much to them.  Even our architecture reveals that we are designed to be a teaching school.  Rather than being barricaded in their offices behind a discouraging outer-works of desks and administrative assistants, faculty members are easily approached by students knocking on their doors.  (more…)

FOCUS Conference 2011 – Reflections on a pilgrimage and meeting Emilio Estevez

Last week, I was over on the other side of the river representing St. Thomas Law at the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) Conference in St. Paul.  I knew Audrie Assad would be singing and that there would be a screening of the un-released film “The Way” Friday night, so I asked my girlfriend to go with me.  Cheap date, right?  I’d really been wanting to see the flick because it’s based on a time-honored Christian pilgrimage that I made last summer.  Called “El Camino de Santiago de Compostela,” during the Middle Ages it started at each pilgrim’s doorstep.  (more…)
